How do you see the Old Testament Law of Moses relating to today’s society?
Jesus tells us to “Go and sin no more” … (John 8:11). But what is a sin? … What are we to turn from and what are we to turn to? What does love one another mean unless love is defined? What does “trusting in the Lord” mean if not obeying Him?
Without a set of rules, without God’s Law, man is adrift. Scripture tells us that: “the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps” (Jer. 10:23). In other words, man was not created with the ability to govern himself. He needs God’s directions, not just for his personal life but for the life of society as well.
God gave these directions through His word, which begins with Moses. And God doesn’t change. He doesn’t give different laws at different times. The Law of Moses was the law for all peoples and all nations throughout all of history. Jesus upheld this law saying that every jot and tittle of it (every letter or portion of a letter) would not pass away until heaven and earth pass away. He also said it applies to Christians in this age. He told us to obey every commandment of God.
Matthew 5:
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
